How to Break Free from Limiting Perceptions

Updated: Mar 20

So many of the beliefs we carry weren’t chosen—we inherited them, absorbed them, or had them placed on us by others. In our last post, we learned that limiting perceptions are labels and uncovered how rewriting our narrative starts with questioning these labels, holding them up to the light, and deciding which truly resonate with us. But what happens after that realization? How do we begin to shift away from limiting perceptions and step into a version of ourselves that feels true? It all starts with small, intentional steps. If you’ve ever felt trapped by a perception that doesn't serve you, this post is for you. Let’s explore simple yet powerful tips to reshape your narrative, stepping into a more authentic version of yourself.

The Weight of Carrying Labels

For me, labels were impactful in unexpected ways. Growing up in a small community in Jamaica had its perks. Everyone was seemingly friendly and warm. You couldn't walk by a neighbour without sharing some pleasantries. But it also had its downside. Everyone was familiar with everyone else's friends, extended family, and even relatives who were residing abroad. They were keen on all the happenings and enjoyed being in the know.

My family, on the other hand, was more conservative, and although not anti-social, we spent little time at community gatherings or indulging in the latest gossip. As a result, I saw very little of the outdoors. It didn’t help that I naturally spoke the 'Queen’s English' and didn’t practise the patois that is our native tongue.

People in the community labeled me 'bougie' and 'stush'—Afro-Caribbean terms meaning posh, classy, snobbish, or stuck-up. These labels caused kids my age to glare at me or mimic the way I spoke. Most times, they wouldn't approach me at all but stare with curiosity like I had just been beamed down from some alien craft. Needless to say, I never fit into the community. To them, it seemed like I carried an aura of superiority. I wished for friends, but I was unrelatable. I was isolated.

For most of my life, I felt obligated to carry myself solely based on what other people required or how they perceived me. Combined with the pressure of living up to my family's image, I found myself in constant turmoil—struggling with who I was and who I thought I needed to be.

See Reader, that's the problem with living by these labels: you try to please everyone but yourself. It took me a few years, but with some effort, I figured out how to break free from limiting perceptions. Here, I compiled a short list of tips we can use to reshape our narrative. They aren’t about proving others wrong but about reclaiming your own identity:

1. Self-Reflection:

Take time to reflect on the labels placed on you. Are they truly reflective of who you are, or are they misinterpretations? Even if they aren't negative, you may find that their definition doesn't align with who you are and that limits who you can be.

2. Set Intentions:

Define who you want to be. Visualize your highest self and the qualities you wish to embody. Write them down, and speak life into them.

3. Take Action:

Begin to act in ways that align with your highest self. This might involve developing new skills or adopting positive habits.

4. Create Healthy Boundaries:

Realize that not everything that comes at you should be allowed to faze you. Some things can be ignored or observed but never touched. When you create healthy boundaries, you decide what you will allow in your space or to allow access to you.

Once I gained clarity on my direction and identity, I was able to block out anything misaligned with me—including others’ perceptions and even my own limiting beliefs.

Dear Reader, for a long time, I didn’t give much thought to the labels placed on me. I didn’t even see them as negative. But in hindsight, I realize how they confined me—shaping how I presented myself. Those perceptions weren’t entirely true, yet they influenced my identity. Now, I understand that those labels were never a reflection of me but rather a projection of those who imposed them. Today, I choose to challenge these perspectives and shape my own narrative. I encourage you to do the same.
